Harbin Engineering University (in short HEU, formerly Harbin Military Engineering Institute), founded in 1953, is located in Harbin, ice city, near beautiful Songhua River. HEU is one of the first key universities in the national "211 Project" (to set up 100 national key universities in 21st Century) and the first batch of key constructed universities in China having graduate school and National University Science Park. HEU has major personnel training and scientific research in the field of shipbuilding engineering, ocean exploration and nuclear energy application.
HEU covers an area of 1.26 million square meters. There are 3188 staff at HEU, including 8 academicians, 335 doctoral tutors, 1,001 professors and associate professors, and about 25000 students in different levels, including 13000 undergraduate students, 8000 postgraduate students.
Aiming to the elite education, HEU makes great effort on building the teams of worldwide first-class engineers, industry leaders and scientists, and improving the high level of education, teaching, and personnel qualities. In recent years, the students have awarded more than 400 international and national prizes in the international and domestic various contests, such as the "Challenge Cup" Students' Extracurricular Scientific Work Competition, Asia-Pacific and the National Students Robot TV contest, American International Mathematical Modeling Contest, National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest etc.
Adhering to the policies of internationalization and open-running, HEU has established wide and substantial partnerships with more than 100 well-known universities and research institutions, such as California University, Berkeley (U.S.A), the University of Sydney (Australia), Far Eastern State Technical University(Russia), Seoul National University (Korea), Hokkaido University(Japan), world top five Marine & Offshore classification societies, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)etc.
