Comenius University Bratislava is the oldest and largest university in the Slovak Republic. Established in 1919, the university draws on the tradition of Academia Istropolitana, which was founded in Bratislava in 1465 by Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary.
Since its founding, the university has ranked among the best educational institutions at the national level and has become an internationally recognised centre of scientific study and research. As the most comprehensive provider of classical university education in Slovakia, Comenius University has retained its status as the Slovak national university.
Comenius University Bratislava has 13 faculties and serves 24,000 students each year across all three levels of degree study, 20,000 of whom are full-time students. The university offers a diverse range of study programmes covering a broad spectrum of human knowledge—from medicine, the humanities and social sciences to natural sciences, mathematics and theology.
Almost 2,800 international students from more than 70 countries study at the oldest university in Slovakia. Students who wish to study abroad can choose from 340 European universities in 30 countries, all of which have concluded bilateral agreements with Comenius University under the Erasmus+ programme. The countries most frequently visited by our students through the LLP/Erasmus programme include Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic.
With more than 2,500 doctoral students, Comenius University Bratislava is also a major scientific institution. The university participates in advanced research projects across a wide range of scientific disciplines, particularly biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, clinical medicine, ecology, geosciences, materials science and engineering, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience, pharmacology, physics, life sciences and space sciences.
